Behind the Champ: Darcy Bacha

By admin • Mar 30th, 2009 • Category: Photo Battle

After four weeks in the line of fire, Darcy Bacha has emerged a champion! He has not only earned himself a spot in our champion gallery, but a camera pack from Dakine as well. Congratulations Darcy, now tell us how you got this shot of Johnnie Paxton!

Johnnie and I’ve been shooting for the past couple years, and his riding style has influenced my photography in so many ways.  We’ve shot a bunch of gnarlier things then this rock jump, but I think this photo really shows what we both want when it comes to getting a photograph.  This was the first week that Timberline was open this year. Pretty much bullet proof ice surrounded the boulder, so we chizzled away a janky lip real quick.. I really like creating shape with lighting, so what better feature to create form then an isolated boulder in the middle of an ice field.  I got real lucky that all my strobes seemed to go off when I wanted um to, I had a elinchrom ranger camera left as my key light, then a speedlight camera right to shape that right corner of the stone. Then I had one more speedlight placed on the rock just out of view of the camera pointing strait up to create a separation between Paxson and the sky. It was real overcast all day but we had a 5 minute break in the clouds that created that subtle gold tint on the snow.. a sweet little bonus.. Thanks yobeat for pickin my photo for the battle plus all the sweet Dakine stuff! and thanks Johnnie for haven the ups to get over that rock! BOO YA SUKKA- Darcy Bacha
