Shaun White is Trying to Kill Snowboarding

A wise man once pointed out that video games are snowboarding’s worst enemy. For a one-time fee, the youth of today can get hours of mindless entertainment. To go snowboarding on the other hand, requires a much greater initial investment and then, even if you have a pass, money for things such as gas and lodge food every time you go. We all know kids are lazy (and these days extra-broke), so which seems more realistic?

It’s cool that Shaun White is making money and whatever, but with the release of his latest Wii snowboarding game, he’s just helping Ubisoft perpetuate obesity and laziness. And the fact that it’s on Wii will make people feel like they are getting exercise (and you know it will be stupid amounts of fun) so it’s that much more dangerous.

So get pumped for snowboarding to suffer another blow this holiday season as the game “Shaun White Snowboarding: World Stage” hits the shelves. If you wanna read the full press release, it’s on Transworld.

  1. No one will buy this anyway the last one sucked dick

  2. I’m no Shaun White fan (beyond his riding, although I do admire his business nous), but I am not sure that I understand the point or premise of this article.

Your premise: Shaun White is destroying snowboarding because he is being a smart businessman and leveraging what little time a snowboarder gets at the top, in order to facilitate the accumulation of a large amount of wealth thereby setting himself up for life?

And because he is doing so, by using a gaming platform, he is destroying snowboarding because it encourages people not to go snowboarding because one can play it on the Wii? Is that a fair synopsis of your contention?

I have multiple issues with this article, viz:

1/ Humans are destroying snowboarding by destroying the planet - shaun White has nothing to do with that beyond being part of the human race
2/ You may as well say anyone and everyone associated with any games (tennis, Tiger Woods gold etc) is destroying that sport - golfers would laugh at you (I am, right now) for saying that. A game is no substitute for playing the game forrealz
3/ Anyone who truly believes that the vast majority (which is what would be needed in order to destroy snowboarding) of people who really love and know snowboarding will substitute it for playing a game, is really being quite disingeneous (perhaps this was satire?)
4/ Snowboarding being expensive has nothing to do with Shaun White - that’s a poor straw man argument. You think it’s expensive now? Wait until global warming really starts to kick us in the bum and resorts need to use waaaaaay more guns, water, power etc to provide snow. Running a ski resort is going to be a very marginal proposition.

You’d do a lot better directing your energy to educating skiers and boarders on the dangers of climate change to their love of the shred.

  3. Tim,

    Really?

  4. nerd alert!

  5. “(perhaps this was satire?)”

    …and I thought *I* was the n00b around here…

  6. Global warming?! Fucking blow me. I bet you believe in god too.

  7. This article is just plain wrong. I want anybody to do a solid 2 hours of the top level half-pipes on Shaun White Road Trip and tell me its not exercise. I am a big wave surfer from Hawaii and I use it to help with balance and get a little work-out. I tell you what it is a hell of a lot more than the kooks I see standing stiff going down the slopes when I go snowboarding. Most people never even try a trick. ALOHA MF*r!
