Todd Richards has been around long enough to know everything about snowboarding, women, the universe and genealogy. This led me to thinking, could Todd know the answers to the classic, “Why can’t chicks ride like dudes?” question. Well, let’s find out.

Who is the best Female Snowboarder of all time?

It’s a tie between Janna Meyen and Torah Bright. Janna should never lose a contest, ever. It’s not really a contest when she enters in my opinion. They are all her slopestyles to lose. Same goes for Torah, basically it’s them against themselves, not the other women.

Who is the worst Female Snowboarder of all time?

Wow, worst? Damn. There have been some bad ones over the last 20 years. I’m done naming names here because I’ll straight get killed. When you call dudes out, maybe, worst case scenario, you get your eye dotted or yelled at. Chicks will straight cut you. Fuck that.

Why is womens snowboarding so far behind men’s? Was there ever an OK girl?

You know, that is a question that people have been asking for a long time. I look at surfing and the girls straight up shred. Snowboarding has some really good riders, super solid stylish riders, however, they are really behind in the progression thing. Only in the last two or three years have the women been landing fully grabbed 720s in slopestyle. I have to say though, I saw Cheryl Mass do the sickest back 7 melon at the X Games last year. I think I actually said “god damn” pretty loud. Why are they so far behind? Maybe it’s in the genes. Self preservation of the uterus or something. It has to be something like that. Fear of getting smashed? Don’t really know. There are always exceptions to the rule and that’s why there are some rippers that just really really stand above the rest of the pack. There just are way fewer of them in the female side of things than with the men.

What makes a good girl snowboarder, and what does it take to turn pro?

Well it used to be a hands-above-the-head 540 in the pipe and a ponytail, now it’s a bit harder. You need a front board, a front 3 and possibly a backflip. That will get you top 10 in the X Games. You won’t win, but you’ll get top 10 if you make all those in one run. As I said before though, there are some women that are really solid riders. Unfortunately for someone that likes to see the sport evolve and progress, they are still doing the same run in the pipe that they did three years ago because it gets money paid. I’ll tell you what though, I about shit myself when Torah did that combo of back three to switch back 7 to Mctwist at X Games. That right there was fucking legit. I don’t care if you are male or female or some kind of weird both person.

Would you rather be a boy pro snowboarder or a girl pro snowboarder and why?

Well if you had the skills of the average park rat at Breckenridge in a cute female package you could be the richest female snowboarder on the face of the earth. Think about how many spa vacations and white BMW 3 series convertibles that could buy you! For reals though, I do think that there are a elite few females that are ripping and really pushing themselves for the good of the sport. I have told probably all of them to their faces that they are awesome at one time or another and I do really believe that they are rippers. This was such a loaded High Fives, what’s next week? Five things that you think your wife could be better at?

  7. and chanelle….ain’t she be on yer team fer rel an shit?

  8. It’s kind of weird to say that the standard for women’s snowboarding to reach is what men do.

ha ha I’d like to see someone put hormones in the water for the men’s olympics. Smaller muscles and mood swings? Would Shawn White show up for practice or get teary eyed over The Notebook in his condo?

But seriously, women’s snowboarding seems to make moves forward collectively. Chorus snowboards with Janna Meyen and crew, the Misschief girls and now it’s probably what’s happening with Peep Show.

It would be cool if women’s snowboarding could just be viewed as its own thing. Judged by its own standards rather than saying men’s snowboarding is the standard.

But I guess I’m not a dude. Maybe if I was that would be the standard from which to judge?

  9. haha, this reminds me of a funny joke… Female Snowboarders!

  10. Rian, I hope you realized you just threw the whole neo feminist thing out the window. Smaller muscles and mood swings? That’s a filthy mass generalization. Do you know how puny and moody the average snowboarder is? Seriously, these guys are like 5′8 and throwing tantrums when they butt check.

As for comparing it to men. Women have a history of trying to compare themselves to men. They want equality. Women want to vote like men, make as much money as men, drink like men, fuck like men (thanks, Sex In The City!), why should we exempt them from snowboarding?

Your logic, is failed. Look at women olympic gymnasts, ballerina’s, divers. They can all twist and contort even more than men because they are so flexible. Snowboarding doesn’t really require much brute strength at all. It’s all just spinning and river dancing on rails like a queen.

Women are stepping it up though. The average female rider is a lot better than they were a few years ago, just at the elite level they’re not quite there. They’ll get there though.

  11. Roland speaks the truth…

  12. very nice roland…but the two girls from Absinthe’s Neverland killed it MFR and annie B I believe…what about that sheman that rides for burton who wins a lot?
