2011 Pipe to Pipe Gets Loose

The Mt. Hood Summer Camps are at war. Spend any amount of time in Gov’y or Welches and you’re sure to hear at least one, if not more, conversations about which camp is better, Windells or High Casade (Sadly MHSSC never gets mentioned.) The truth is, both camps are amazing, and for one day at year, the Bonfire Pipe to Pipe brings everyone together in an all out shred fest for the ultimate glory (read: $1000.)
This year unveiled the double mini pipe for the snowboard portion, similar to last year’s mini pipe, but ya know, twice as good. Smattered with tubes, boxes and pipes, the set up lent itself to mayhem as people dropped quickly and everyone picked a different line. All day it was a series of near misses and collisions, interspersed with some serious stunts from the likes of Mike Rav, Justin Fronius, Kyle Lopiccilo, Sawyer Deen, Jaeger Bailey, Sam Taxwood and many more. Backflips over the spine were a popular choice, and the tech went down mostly on the final tube. You can watch the videos or look at the results to figure out who really killed it, and why Kyle Loppicilo was crowned the champ.
A new addition to the snow portion this year was the industry division, which actually went down the night before, in the bar. A few brave souls made it out to compete, which when you’re washed up actually means spraying the photographers on your way down the pipe. Dustin Anderson did actual tricks and was able to beat out Alex Lopez, Robbie Sell and Dave Doman for the 1st ever industry crown.
After the snow portion wrapped, everyone headed down to Windells for burrito night (the best night of camp food every session) followed by the skate contest. Windells concrete jungle is the best skatepark in Oregon (not arguably, actually) and this is a chance for the general public to skate it, so the danger level was high. The sun was setting when the pros finally got going, and it was worth the wait. Basically, dudes who can skate anything, going for it on the perfect transitions makes for a real treat. Even Omar Hassan came out to enjoy the park.

Unlike the snow portion, where everyone remained unscathed, one collision sent Rian Lindemen to the hospital with two split front teeth (but not until after he’d nailed a few of his token McTwists.) A little course clean up and it was back to business. Thirty minutes later, Willis Kimbel skated away the champion for the second year in a row.
Once again the Pipe to Pipe mainly proved that no matter which camp you choose, Mt. Hood is the place to be this summer. Thanks to Bonfire, Windells, Timberline and all the other event sponsors for making it possible.
