Behind the Shot: Ben Birk

Now that the Firing Squad is back and better than ever, it’s giving past losers and chance at redemption. In fact, the first person to win a Burton camera bag, Ben Birk, has competed something like 4,000 times before and never gone the distance. But since these days it only takes two weeks of bothering your friends, and ya know, a sick photo, he pulled it off! Congrats Ben, now tell us about this shot!

Who is the rider, where was it taken and when?

The rider is Will Bateman and it was take on January 16 2010 in Lake Tahoe on the Nevada side.

What was the set up you used to take it?

Body: Canon EOS-1D Mark III Lens: Canon EF 15mm f/2.8 fisheye Lighting: Pocket Wizard Plus II, Elinchrom Ranger RX w/ A-Head, Sunpak 555

If you took it again, would you do anything differently?

Nope. I have another version that was published and this one was one of the backup photos. I’m stoked on all the shots.

Who are you, where do you live, and what do you normally shoot?

I am named Ben Birk, I live in Lake Tahoe California, and I normally shoot exotic cartoons.

What do you think of the new Firing Squad format?

I don’t remember the old. Kinda like how you don’t remember the old versions of facebook or what myspace even looks like anymore.

Anything else you’d like to say to the YoBeat public?

Don’t be a consumer.

Do you have a website where people can check out more of your work?
