Tim Humphreys is good at snowboarding. That tends to be the main criteria for picking our interviewees and Tim’s ability to ride rails and powder is what has made him a name to remember over the years. I met Humpy at the Windell’s pro house and I was instantly curious about getting his opinion on his inclusion in Brooke’s ” Bros of snowboarding” chart. I was also curious to find out if the “Tim Humphreys” that comments on Yobeat was truly him. Anyways, I stuck an iphone in his face and recorded our conversation.
So i’m gonna record you on this iphone and ask you a bunch of questions.
People call you humpy, does that make everyday a hump day?
I mean when you hump like I do, it’s just all day ‘erry day. classic humpin shit, non-stop.
You mean like a porn star of snowboarding?
What about a horny dog?
Horny dog? ya… maybe. Just going at this and that. Maybe they are down, but if not you gotta be persistent.
Lick their face?
Definitely lick their face. And steal all their food. (Laughter)
That’s the secret to getting chicks?
No. Don’t do that. You gotta be straight up. I don’t like stealing things.
That sounds better, I’m sure you have a good outlook. People have nice things to say about you.
Do they really?
Shit, I don’t know. You comment on Yobeat as your real name though right? Do you like talking shit on Yobeat?
Yes, I love it. Talking shit is funny in general. Especially when some little internet bitch starts posting some shit and getting out of line. You’ve gotta regulate them and let ‘em know. Might as well post as my real name…I’m out on the hill, come fuck with it. See you on the snow.
Any specific commenters that really grind your gears?
Naw, none of those kids get to me because I used to be one of them…saying things just for shits and giggles. I didn’t really believe half the shit I used to say but it’s hilarious to get people going. Get ‘em riled up.
Does it push people to be better?
A little bit. If some one is talking shit then I might be more inclined to be on my game.
What brings you to hood?
I was here Windells session 4 with Neff, and then I was lucky enough to get to stay for session 5 with Cam Pierce, Niko Cioffi and all the Gremlinz
You chill with the Gremlinz?
Ya, I just went and hung out with those guys last night. Went in the bus for the first time actually. I’ve seen that bus a hundred times though, I lived not too far down the street from them in Tahoe this past winter and I would hang out all the time, I just wouldn’t go in the bus cus they had a nice big house that we could hang out in.
Are people in Govy scared of the Gremlinz?
They are all nice but maybe they just look scary to people because they haven’t showered since they are living in a bus. They are awesome kids though. They shred so hard, super nice, and I’m sure if you went up to them and say hey, they would be cool about it.
You had kind of a rough winter, huh?
Ya, it started of in December at Dew Tour. I got hurt and didn’t even take my second run. I got back two days later but then I separated my AC joint and was out for like three months. Beginning of March I got a couple days in but then found out that Standard was pulling the plug on their movie for this year. I was hurt all year and didn’t film shit, but now I don’t have to film project so I guess it wasn’t that bad because now i don’t have a bunch of shots that are going nowhere. I rode around for a few weeks down in Park City shooting a Neff ad in Neffland. We had just gotten the flashes set up and when I hiking back up I got hit by a ski racer. It was 7:30 in the morning becasue we were trying to get the golden light and they had just opened the chairs. We had all these boards blocking off the roller that we were using to drop in off but he was hugging them like a gate and cutting back in to air over it. I ditched my board and tried to jump to the side but he clipped my leg and we both got layed out. We were both pretty incapacitated on the ground like one hundred feet apart from each other. He was going so fast. Some of his speed suit was actually melted on to my board. I was out for two weeks after that and then I rounded up some shots in Tahoe, went to alaska for Flow’s Tailgate Ak and that’s where my season really started.
What’s the deal with Tailgate AK?
You are in a valley and there are two walls of mountains on each side. A bunch of people bring RV’s, Tents, whatever people can come up on really. Some people built snow caves which I could not get down on. A little too cold. It’s kind of like a backcountry festival though. People come and camp and then bring sleds, there are a few heli opps and a bunch of people get out into the backcountry. They also have a beer garden at night and some other fun stuff to do. There was a lot of good people there though so a lot of the close-in stuff got tracked quick. One day I think we blew three motors out and one sled caught on fire and burned to the ground. That’ll Happen. I was actually in a spot out in tahoe, I can’t tell you th name cus the shit is too good, but He left his e-braeak on in the sled. We got like five or six miles out and the sled started smoking. The engine caught on fire but we put it out with snow. If you leave it parked with the e-break on right after you use it and let it sit over night it can freeze and then stick in the morning, even when you undo it. Sleds will still work after that though if you put the fire out.
Why isn’t Standard making a movie?
They didn’t have enough sponsorship budget. They only had half of what 2112 did, last year’s movie. I talked to Hatchet for a little bit and he pretty much said he didn’t want to make a half-ass movie. He decided to chill for this year and regruop, hopefully come back with a better plan. He wants to make one next year, he just wants to get more sponsors. A lot of the bigger sponsors like Monstor, and Nike are making their own movies. They probably pulled out of a few projects to do that so I think that was one thing.
Do You think mega companies with their own media department is a bad thing for film companies?
Well those companies just brought it in house this year. They have been spreading their riders out over a lot of different projects over the years but this year they wanted to bring them together for one. I feel like this stuff goes in cycles. They will do their company branded thing and then switch it up later and spread things out again. That’s how everything is. It goes up and down, it’s just the way it is.
You were featured in the Bros of Snowboarding diagram. Are you bummed or Stoked?
I was a preppy stoner dude, or something. I think it is hilarious. I feel like I fit in a broad range of categories. I am in some good company on the Chart though, that’s for sure. Sage is in the middle, I want to be in the manly one before the preppy one though. You guys said Jeremey Jones is a jock stoner which I could sort of see, him having that long hair. Niko is the stoner guy and he doesn’t even smoke weed. I talked to him about it like two days ago and he said he hadn’t smoked all winter. You guys said Danny kass was a dudely Prep jock but I wouldn’t label him as a jock. If anything i’d make him a stoner jock dude… But that’s John J though and I wouldn’t put them in the same category….I don’t know, this shit is just funny. (We were looking at the chart)
Do you think that the majority of pro snowboarders smoke weed?
I think the majority of them do. (laughter) Two thirds maybe. Actually I’d say 80% of snowboarders do it but mostly while they are riding.
What happens when you leave Oregon or are you staying here forever?
Head coach at High cascade said I Could coach session 5 which I would not be opposed to because the staff sales at High Cascade are pretty nice.
Filming a lot while you are here?
with a GoPro Mostly. Filmed some skating and some snowboarding and stuff.
Do you Snapchat your tricks?
I have a snapchat but I never use it. It’s too much social media. I don’t even look at my Facebook anymore. I just push the Facebook and Twitter buttons in intsagram so I cover three bases at once.
You spent some time at Woodward Tahoe. Is it cooler than going to Hood?
It’s just different. The Indoor section is insane. They have these sketchy roller board things and they have a pump track zone where you can figure out how to use them. Once you get the feel for them you take them off jumps and I’ve seen people do triples on them. They go twice as big as snow flex and the foam pit goes forever. You can’t max it out. A lot of people just don’t want to travel all the way to Mount Hood, but there are a lot of people that live near Copper or Tahoe that want to progress themselves and it’s easier to get to. When I was there I saw Henrik Harlaut riding a snowboard and just killing it. I guess the set up was really small for skis so they all just went to the demo center and got snowboards.
How do you feel about freeskiing?
It’s cool. I’ve seen some really cool movies this year. We are all just sliding down snow, and spinning in the air, touching our boards weird and stuff, and that determines how cool we are…whatever.
Flow Snowbaords, Neff Outerwear, you heard that right bitches NEFF OUTERWEAR in stores this fall. NXTZ to keep that burn off my face, that’s why I don’t have a google tan, and that’s about it. Shout out to Windells for hooking it up and moving the rope tow up to the big jump.
