Zack Lefter, a.k.a. “the kid,” is the man behind the Gremlinz edits. I often get the impression that he is the archetype of the Gremlinz, or perhaps the living power animal. I crossed paths with the Gremlinz a few times this past year and Lefter was always in the thick of it, capturing the madness that surrounds them. I figured now was a good time to talk with the kid, because Bussit the movie will be dropping soon, a movie I am highly anticipating.
Is Bussit going to be a traditional movie with parts or will it focus more on the journey?
The DVD shows the chronological order of the trip, It’s kinda like a documentary. it’s an hour and a half movie, and then there’s another movie on the DVD that’s just like a regular snowboard movie with parts and shit that didn’t happen on the bus trip mixed with some shit that did happen. That movie is like 25 minutes long.
How can we tell people on Yobeat where to get it?
Buy it off the website. Darkside, and some stores will have it, not many though. We’ll make much more money selling it ourselves.
How long did that last you guys, or how long did that take?
I think it was like two or three weeks, I forget, exaclty.
So where does the nickname “the kid” come from?
Basically just from Gucci and all the rap I listen to.
Word, when did you figure out the genius iPhone around the neck rig? Was that your invention?
I dunno, I was the first person that I saw do it. My phone was cracking, and I saw that I could just break the back open and put a ring around it, and that’s how it came about.
Are Caked snowboards still real?
Yea Caked is still going at it. I talked to Dave and he said they got more boards. I wanted to do a collaboration at some point soon. We were talking about that, but we haven’t finalized it.
How did you come to meet [Caked] Dave?
It was back in like ’08 when I was in Truckee. He came out because he knew Dakota and Lucas and Doobie and he just was livin around the house. I was synched up with him so I’ve always been really good tryin to stay with the connection even though he’s been on the huge for a minute. But basically he just lived at our house for a good amount of time.
Who gave you the eye of horus tattoo on your hand, and why did you get that in particular?
Tanya, Lucas’s wife gave me that tattoo one night. I dunno, I was always just down with the idea of this all-seeing third eye. Everyone always asks me this question and I kinda I just liked it and wanted to get it tattooed on me.
I remember you saying at Superpark that you only drink Hennessy and pineapple juice, is that still true?
I mean, it’s not all I drink, but that’s basically what I drink when I go to the bar or something.
Do you have an estimation of how many Hennessy bottles you guys drank on the Bussit tour?
Uhh, I don’t know. I know at some bars they like just ran out while we were there cus we’d just go in so deep.
Have you guys made any moves on purchasing property for Sababaland yet?
Yeah, we found land, but we’re working on getting stuff right now. We’ve been doing a lot of other work for a friend who is a landscape architect and he’s been helping out a bunch. But yea, we put a payment down. It is like underway though. We don’t have it yet, but on the DVD there’s also a Sababaland edit that Tyler Lynch made. I think he made the whole edit. He’s kinda like, the heart of the whole thing. So, that’s on the DVD so it kinda gives you a jist of what’s up, but you don’t exactly know.
Sick. Could you tell me what it was like to go to Italy with Niko?
It was fun. It was a good person to go with, and I just wanted to go to Italy and drink a cup of coffee, that’s my favorite thing. There were a few crazy things that happened but we just kinda chilled and ate good food and drank good coffee and wine. We ended up getting lost one night, some random town far away from our hotel, but we hitchhiked back, and it wasn’t that bad.
Is Niko kinda a big supporter of gremlinz financially, taking people on trips and shit?
No, definitely not. Niko didn’t even come on a lot of bus trips with us. JSLV helped a bunch, but besides that we had to spend money we had from the company (GBP) on the bus trip. When we go on a trip, whoever doesn’t do anything that wants to come on the bus has to pay something. This last Denver trip a bunch of people wanted to come, but a lot of them don’t do anything, yaknow? Like help with the company or anything like that, So we just charge ‘em. Niko does help, but we’ve been doin’ it without his money.
Yea. Do you have a part of the movie that you were most excited about?
My favorite part is probably like the Oregon coast, where it’s just like a montage of driving down the coast with nice beaches and waterfalls and stuff.
Whose riding were you most stoked about editing?
Uh, I don’t know, to me it’s all the same, kinda. It’s more a question of what song I liked the most. There’s no real full really parts in the movie, it’s all multiple people in a part. Tyler and Niko’s shots are going to a JSLV movie which is kind of a bummer, but there’s still a lot of skating footage and Grenade Games and whatnot, but we had to save the riding for the JSLV movie.
What’s the deal with the JSLV movie?
Niko and Tyler’s footage will be in the JSLV online video parts in January, I think. I filmed basically all of Tyler’s, some of Nikos. But basically all their best snowboarding shots got saved for that. Tyler’s gonna have a sick part.
What influenced your editing style?
Well, this old ski movie called LCP, Loose Cannon Playas was one. These skiers were just always doin’ crazy shit, jumping off huge cliffs and showin’ raw shit, other than skiing. Smokin’ weed and shit. I used to ski in middle school, I liked what they did. I’m influenced by rap videos too because it’s all edited to the beat, so I can see the way they cut it up, and you can cut it up the same way. That’s why I love hip hop. It’s the best to edit to in my opinion.
Who are your top 5 artists right now?
Gucci and Riff Raff, probably. Yea. Just Gucci and Riff Raff, mainly. Always Dipset. That’s about it.
Hell, yea, man. Shout outs?
GBP, JSLV, Shirefit, and Caked, and that’s about it.
