The Second Annual Red Bull Heavy Metal Challenge thrashes Portland

Portland loke dawg Ahmon Stamps had the obvious advantage of knowing what color pants to wear to match the course. If there were prizes for fashion he would have taken it.

Have you ever anticipated an certain event, got there and it sucked?
Well I was definitely looking forward to this event and suck it did not. The second annual Red bull Heavy Metal Contest was damn fun. And I know Bjorn Lienes, TJ Schnieder, and Kyle Clancy all had fun because they left with the $20,000 worth of prize money.

The first part of the contest was on the straight rails. One was a 20 stair and the other was a gap to 15 stair. Pretty much every trick in the book was thrown down in one hour on two rails. Bjorn won the straight rail with a cab-270, backside lipslide to fakie. Enough said.

Part 2 of the event was the kinked rails. They were hairy to say the least. Only about 8 or 9 of the guys even messed with them. Believe it or not the Grenade boys pretty much man-handled the kinker and Kyle Clancy took home $10,000. Danny Kass laid down a 50-50 frontside 360-out that was out of control. I was pretty impressed with Danny, he threw down 5 solid tricks on the kinked rail. Englesman was definitely in the running for this one with a switch boardslide but it ended being the meeeaaaanest frontboard by Clancy to win.

In true Red Bull Fashion there was a great after party at Portland's
Berbati's Pan. The AC DC cover band Hells Bells played to a overcrowded
room of 500 plus. It was the typical industry wastiods on the loose type
event. I had a great time and must say Red Bull, Volcom  and Snowboarder
Magazine did a great job with this event.
